THEME OF THE WEEK
(11/9-11/14): The Beauty of Opening & Cobra Pose
The Beauty of Opening
“Let yourself be open and life will be easier. A spoon of salt in a glass of water makes the water undrinkable. A spoon of salt in a lake is almost unnoticed.”
-Buddha Siddhartha Guatama Shakyamuni
It can be challenging to open up in this life. To be curled/closed/turned away is to protect and buffer oneself… to guard against the gales of misfortune and unrequited love.
But for the yogi, living a closed life is not an option. We want to live fully. We want to feel entirely alive and present, and so we must learn to open.
Through building the capacity to be more open, we gradually relinquish control over our little worlds.
We make space for new textures, flavors, possibilities, and experiences. Ironically, this space also causes hard stuff to pain us less… there is space for the full human experience.
This week, we will be exploring the beauty of opening so you may apply it to anywhere in your life you feel ready to expand.
The physical strength and refined body awareness needed to shape yourself into an elegant cobra pose is not as simple as it may seem.
This week our classes will also emphasize various aspects of the mechanics of cobra pose. Your neck, spine, back and hip flexors will certainly appreciate this.
Yoga Class: OPEN TO NOW
Here we open ourselves to the present moment – and in particular we bravely open to that which we might have been closed to in the past. Fun warm-ups, a standing breath of joy, crescent lunge, and elegant flowing sequences.
Savasana: EASING OPEN
Slowly, sweetly ease into a state of relaxed openness while feeling the support of the earth beneath you.
Yoga Class: MOVES FOR MERMAIDS
What’s the difference between you and a mermaid? 1) You can’t breathe underwater. 2) Mermaids have one fin instead of two legs! In today’s class We do all kinds of incredibly detailed exercises to activate your inner thighs and low belly strength so you have a lower bod more like a mer-person. Plus Planks, cobra, high lunges and a little bit of warrior action.
Self-Massage: CHEST & INNER THIGHS
Soothe your chest tissues on the soft sponge ball and detail your inner thighs with firm therapy balls. Wake up these tissues with attention and care.
Yoga Class: HOW THE SCAPULAE LAY
Ah your shoulder blades (aka “wings”) are just so wondrous! In this class you’ll learn all the ways they move, and how they relate to numerous other yoga poses and positions in daily life. Expect simple shoulder exercises, lots of cobra pose, some planks and a powerful triangle.
Meditation: NEW DIMENSIONS
Explore the subtle realms within yourself and find joy in simple presence. Travel from the tangible world to the outer reaches of space, then to the dimensions within. Attune to the spark of life that animates you. Rejoice.
Yoga Class: FULL FRONTAL FASCIA
Stretch and lengthen your whole front body, from forehead to toes. Sweeping sun salutes, crescent lunges, lengthening core work and a couple twisty hip-flexor-stretching balance challenges. You got this.
Self-massage: UPPER SPINE & HIP FLEXORS
Roll out your hip flexors and upper spine with small therapy balls. This will help you stand up straight, find more ease in your hips, and reduce strain to your knees.
Yoga Class: EXPANDING HEART
Stretch your chest and expand the musculature to “open your heart.” Lots of articulation of your upper spine with locusts, sphinx and cobra pose. Plus some juicy shoulder stuff with sun salutations throughout.
Meditation: OPEN HEART WISDOM
Where have you closed your heart? Where have you shut down? Would you consider gently activating your open heart wisdom? Explore it in this meditation…
