It may seem like time has been frozen for the past year, and you might feel like you should be able to waltz back into life as you knew it. But that’s just not possible.
Everything has changed. You have changed.
Oftentimes, over the years, when a student is going through a tough time or has a body question, they have asked me what to do about it. They want so badly for me to have the best answer for them, as they are on new ground, and are feeling stumped.
As a teacher, it can be tempting to hop up on a pedestal and tell that person what I think they should do. Proclaim the best course of action for them! And for the Whole World while I’m at it!
But the Only Truth is, I don’t know what they should do.
I can offer my resources, I can share my experience, I can give them a few things to try…
But I cannot possibly know what they should do. It’s their body. It’s their life. It’s their choice.
Relinquishing the power of choice back to the student is probably the most important teaching I have ever given. Showing the student that they are their own authority.
Furthermore, trusting them – showing them with my face and body language and tone that I trust them to make the best choice for them – that’s the ultimate teaching.
And this is what I want to offer you now.
Should you return to the gym?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
Should you go back to the office?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
Should you return to the same social circles?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
Should you get the vaccine?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
Should you move closer to nature?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
Should you end your marriage?
It’s your body. It’s your life. It’s your choice.
I don’t know what You should do. Your teachers, your family, your partner, even your doctor don’t know what you should do better than You. Your social media network certainly doesn’t know what you should do.
You know best.
And where are the answers kept?
In your body, of course.
If you aren’t used to ‘listening in’ for answers this might be hard to fathom. But your body is the most incredible resource for insights into the best course of action.
Learning to listen to your body has this funny way of clarifying everything.
Check out my next post for a free practice to access true-to-you answers in your own physical body. Use it for questions big and small. Learn to trust yourself more every day.
And while you’re at it, give others the space and grace to trust themselves as well…
